Concurrent access licenses (CAL) are "floating" licenses drawn from the server only for the length of a connected session. When someone privileged to use a CAL license is not connected to the server, it will be free for use by others. Generally speaking, it is best to assign CAL licenses based on group membership rather than to individuals. If the "group" strategy is used, individuals will draw the highest privileged license to which their group memberships entitle them.
Let's take the example of an in-house translator assigned to both the "Internal translators" group (to which multiple Translator Pro (TP) licenses are assigned) and the "Administrators" group (to which multiple Project Manager (PM) licenses are assigned). When that individual connects to the server, if a PM license is available, that license will be assigned. If not, a TP license will be provided. Upon termination of the session, the license used by that individual will be released.
