Files originating from Phrase (formerly known as "Memsource") have the MXLIFF extension. As of memoQ version 9.14, this variant of XLIFF used by Phrase is not well-supported by memoQ without additional configuration. For a viable configuration (filters and a template), see the blog article and resources from Marek Pawelec. However, with appropriate configuration, jobs created in Phrase can be exported and processed in memoQ without data loss or other corruption, and all proprietary tags from Phrase are properly protected and verified by QA measures in memoQ. When working in Phrase itself, it is usually best to do the translation and review work in the Phrase desktop client, which offers ergonomics superior to the web client and which also supports regular expressions (regex) for filtering as well as find and replace operations.

The basic configuration for working with MXLIFF files from Phrase has been integrated into the general client template of Linguaemundi, so no special measures are necessary to create an online project to work with these files. Simply follow the steps to prepare and export the MXLIFF files, and import these to memoQ using either the folder import option in an appropriate template project or by choosing individual MXLIFF files using the "All files" setting in the import dialog (because the extension is not recognized in current versions of memoQ).

Common scenarios[edit | edit source]

There are three common situations for a Phrase project to be handled in memoQ, each with small differences in the desirable preparation steps. If there are useful resources in the online project, TM content and non-translatables may be included in the MXLIFF files by pre-translation (a low match setting is recommended to increase the "harvest" of possible terminology), and both TM and term base content can be consulted conveniently using the Phrase desktop client accessing a local copy of the MXLIFF file. The Phrase desktop client can also make use of information which has been exported from a memoQ Regex Assistant library in readable formats such as HTML, from which the regex can be copied and pasted into the appropriate filter or find and replace fields in the Phrase desktop client.

No useful TM[edit | edit source]

The simplest scenario involves a job with no existing TM or machine trashlation. Simply export the MXLIFF files and import them to a memoQ project created from a Phrase-capable template. In the unlikely event that there are useful term bases, these can be accessed easily with the Phrase desktop client using a copy of the MXLIFF.

The best access to online Phrase content, however, can usually be achieved by exporting the TM and term base resources and importing these for use in memoQ. This access needs to be discussed and arranged with the client, and the possibilities should be explored by the project manager where appropriate.

Useful TM content[edit | edit source]

Where there is useful content in the online Phrase TMs, it typically suffices to pre-translate in the web client with low fuzzy match settings, and then export the MXLIFF files and handle as above. Once again, quick access to online resources can be achieved using the Phrase desktop client.

PEMT[edit | edit source]

Export the MXLIFF files and import them to a memoQ project created from a Phrase-capable template. Resource access for concordance or term base lookups can be achieved via the Phrase desktop client if exported resources are not available for use in memoQ.

Submitting the finished work to the Phrase server[edit | edit source]

The completed MXLIFF files can be uploaded from the Phrase desktop client or via the web client. Note that at any intermediate stage, an MXLIFF can be exported from an ongoing memoQ online project and be processed (opened and/or uploaded) in the Phrase desktop editor or web client. This might be done, for example, to let a client see "progress" in the Phrase server project.
